How to use this tool

  1. Estimate unique companies in the total market.
  2. Enter annual value per company and the share you can serve.
  3. Set a realistic capture share of SAM and compare the resulting markets.

A worked example

Input

10,000 companies · $1,200 annual value
30% serviceable · 2% capture of SAM

Output

TAM $12M · SAM $3.6M · SOM $72,000 annually

SOM applies the capture share to SAM, not directly to the entire market. The supplied company count is not queried from a database.

What the result means

Use unique buying companies as the starting count. Compare whether the serviceable share reflects your geography, product scope and delivery capacity, then set a realistic share of SAM for SOM.

Company counts and shares come from you; no database count is queried. Use unique buying companies rather than the number of people in a contact database.

Frequently asked questions

How are TAM, SAM and SOM calculated?

TAM is total buying companies times annual customer value. SAM applies the serviceable share to TAM. SOM applies the obtainable capture share to SAM; the two shares are sequential.

Can I use a contact-database count as the company count?

Not directly. Several people can work at one company. Start with an estimate of unique buying companies and document its source; this calculator does not retrieve or deduplicate market records.
